Elective Modules

MTU Cork wishes you to take ownership of your own learning. The free choice module is a reserved one module place in each semester where you, the learner, can decide what you would like to study. Many of you may wish to choose an elective module offered by your department as your free choice but some of you may wish to choose an alternative module to develop skills and interests outside your main area of study.

The Department of Mathematics has developed a number of maths modules specifically geared towards this free choice.

If there are not enough students registered for a module it may not run. The deadline for module enrolment in Semester One is typically in early October, and for Semester Two it is typically in early February. See here for more.

MATH6028 MATHEMATICAL EXPLORATIONS --- semester 1 and SEMESTER 2

This module explores how Mathematics is intrinsically linked to the world around us. The module is fun and hopes to take advantage of the participant’s innate passion for things mathematical. The student must to be willing to actively engage and participate through the weekly labs to make the most of the module.

STAT8008 Time series and PCA

This module provides methods to develop and critically evaluate multivariate regression models and
time series models.

STAT9005 TIME SERIES AND Factor Analysis --- SEMESTER 2

This module will provide the learner with the necessary tools to develop and critically evaluate structural equation modelling and time series models. In this module, data will be summarised using factor analysis, while the forecasting function of models is presented and evaluated, enabling the learner to create short and medium term forecasting models.
